A Researcher, Educator, and Advocate
The Guild remembers Steven H. Stumpf, EdD, with profound sadness and deep gratitude for his service.
Dr. Stumpf served as the Guild’s National Director of Education and was a respected researcher, educator, and devoted advocate for the acupuncture profession. He dedicated much of his professional life to understanding and improving the working conditions and opportunities available to licensed acupuncturists.
Understanding the Acupuncture Workforce.
In 2010, Dr. Stumpf co-authored two pioneering papers—Unveiling the United States Acupuncture Workforce and Mainstreaming Acupuncture: Barriers and Solutions. These studies were among the first to document the limited employment opportunities and economic challenges facing many licensed acupuncturists.
In 2012, he collaborated with the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine on The U.S. Acupuncture Workforce: The Economics of Practice. This research further examined the realities of acupuncture practice and practitioners’ desire for greater opportunities within mainstream healthcare.
His Vision for the Profession
Dr. Stumpf believed that acupuncture could learn from the paths followed by other healthcare professions, including medicine, nursing, osteopathic medicine, chiropractic medicine, physical therapy, and physician-assistant practice.
He reminded us that acupuncture does not have to forge an entirely new path when proven models for professional recognition and healthcare integration already exist.
A Lasting Foundation for Change
Through his research, teaching, and service, Dr. Stumpf courageously brought attention to challenges that were too often overlooked. His work provided a stronger foundation for professional advocacy, workforce development, and meaningful change.
His vision and commitment to strengthening the acupuncture profession will continue to guide and inspire us.

The Guild extends its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Stumpf’s family, friends, colleagues, and everyone whose life was touched by his work. We are deeply grateful for his leadership, scholarship, and years of dedicated service.
